SUSTAINABLE FASHION IN INDIA & BANGLADESH
 
WHAT   
  • The Readymade Garment Manufacturing (RMG) sector is of high strategic and economic importance for both India & Bangladesh and Sweden in terms of trade, growth, and employment opportunities. The sector employs more than 4 million workers in Bangladesh and contributes to around 11% of the nation’s GDP. 
  • India is world’s sixth largest exporter of textile and apparel products with total shipments worth USD 36 billion in FY 2023. The government has setup a target of USD 100 billion worth exports by 2030.  
  • Multiple external factors including emergence of greener consumer and stricter regulations across key consumer market along with internal net zero targets of sourcing companies and resource constraints demands faster shift towards sustainable production practices.
 
HOW  
  • Sustainable fashion platform is aimed at introducing advanced Swedish renewable and energy efficiency solutions, which are relevant for Bangladesh and India. 
  • Generate awareness about best practices related to sustainability, availability, and deployment of high-quality renewable solutions and reduction of greenhouse gas emission. 
  • Develop Swedish Expert Group including agencies, brands, and Team Sweden representatives for knowledge sharing, inputs for stakeholder meetings and reference for stakeholders. 
  • Conduct Joint Working Group Meeting among a Swedish delegation comprising of platform members and key local stakeholders such as Ministries, BGMEA etc. for regulatory and guideline pushes through policy dialogues.  
  • Net-benefit to environment by implementing solutions that allows for better use of resources, recycling and overall circular economy, energy efficiency and renewable energy allowing for less reliance on fossil fuels.
