REVAMPING PHILIPPINE CONNECTIVITY AND PUBLIC TRANSPORT
WHAT
- The Philippines is facing a severe mobility crisis, with Metro Manila ranked as the most congested city globally, costing the economy 22 billion USD annually due to delays and inefficiencies. This figure could rise to 34 billion USD by 2035. Urban centers like Cebu, Davao, Bacolod, Iloilo, and Cagayan de Oro face similar transport challenges, as rapid urbanization outpaces infrastructure development, particularly in public transport.
- The lack of efficient public transport, particularly buses, is a key issue. In cities like Cebu and Davao, inadequate bus systems and rising private vehicle ownership contribute to severe gridlocks, especially during peak hours. As urban populations grow, the demand for reliable and sustainable public transport is reaching critical levels.
- Out of the 186 Infrastructure Flagship Projects (IFPs) under the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) and President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., 135 of these projects are focused on enhancing physical connectivity across the Philippines. These projects collectively have an indicative cost exceeding USD 140 bn, encompassing a wide range of initiatives such as Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems, rail, roads and expressways, bridges, and airports. Key projects include:
- Bataan-Cavite Interlink Bridge – 3.74 billion USD
- Cebu Bus Rapit Transit System – 1.6 billion USD
- Metro Davao Public Transport Modernization Project – 6.83 billion USD
- Metro Manila Subway – 8.34 billion USD
- New Dumaguete Airport Development Project – 290 million USD
- Panay-Guimaras-Negros Inter-Island Link Bridge – 3.21 billion USD
HOW
- Contribute to the design and execution of innovative Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems that prioritize sustainability, efficiency, and accessibility for commuters.
- Introduce advanced bus technologies such as electric buses, real-time tracking, and smart ticketing systems to optimize operations and reduce environmental impact.
- Partner with the Philippine government through Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) frameworks to co-develop and implement large-scale BRT infrastructure projects.
- Provide expertise in operational planning, network design, and integration of BRT systems into existing transport networks to ensure seamless and efficient commuter experiences.
