Smart and sustainable water management in Malaysia

what
  • Malaysia's water resources face challenges from rapid economic and population growth, as well as climate change. Despite being in the equatorial region with high rainfall, uneven distribution leads to water scarcity in some areas and flooding in others.
  • Hence, sustainable water management is vital to secure water resources for current and future generations.

how
  • Water today in Malaysia derives from 98% surface water and only 2% ground water.
  • Around 85% of Malaysia’s water supply comes from rivers. Malaysia needs to move towards reclaimed water.
  • Water consumption is high in Malaysia, at an average of 230 litres per capita a day. Low tariffs are a reason for wasteful consumption as communities and businesses can use water without a realistic cost burden.
  • Promote and expand the capacity of rainwater harvesting.
  • Capacity building as it enhances knowledge, skills, and stakeholder engagement, fostering effective decision-making, innovation, and resilience for sustainable water resource management.
  • Harness proven technologies within water leakage prevention and detection.
  • Increase the use of renewable energy by utilising solar power at treatment plants.
  • Increase the use of recycled water.
