EMPOWERING THE PHILIPPINES THROUGH RENEWABLES AND GRID DEVELOPMENT

WHAT
  • The Philippines is at a pivotal moment in its energy transition, driven by pressing challenges and significant opportunities in renewable energy and smart grid modernization. The country faces high electricity costs due to its heavy reliance on imported coal, which accounts for 60% of its electricity generation. In many off-grid islands, electricity is available for only 8 to 16 hours daily, leaving approximately 468,000 households without access to reliable power.
  • Despite this, Philippines has immense renewable energy potential. The country is already a global leader in geothermal energy production and possesses substantial untapped resources in solar, wind, and hydropower. According to the World Bank, the Philippines has an estimated offshore wind capacity of 178 GW, with 92 contracts already awarded to renewable energy developers, representing a combined potential capacity of 66 GW. Additionally, solar and hydropower are seeing steady growth, further solidifying the nation’s potential to become a renewable energy powerhouse.
  • The government has demonstrated its commitment to this transition through its National Renewable Energy Program (NREP) 2020–2040, which outlines ambitious goals of achieving 35% renewable energy in the power mix by 2030 and 50% by 2040.
  • Recent policy reforms allowing 100% foreign ownership in renewable energy projects have further opened the door for international collaboration, creating an unprecedented opportunity for global businesses to support the Philippines’ energy transition.

HOW
  • Partner with local developers to deploy cutting-edge technologies for offshore wind farms and solar power systems, particularly for underserved communities.
  • Optimize and expand geothermal energy, a key resource in the Philippines, using Swedish expertise.
  • Modernize the grid with smart technologies, microgrids for off-grid areas, and energy storage solutions to enhance reliability and efficiency.
  • Support long-term sustainability through training programs that build local capacity to manage and maintain renewable energy systems.
