Re-vitalizing the semiconductor industry in Japan
What

Japanese semiconductor share in the world  has gone from 50% in 1988 to 10% in 2019,  although still strong in equipment and material. Japan could not follow the trend in which the core sector in semiconductor shifted from Memory (DRAM) to Logic (CPU) in 1990s and Japan could not follow the trend in semiconductor industry which shifted from vertically integrated structure to horizontal separated structure consisting of fabless manufacturer and foundry since 1990s.

Japan has now launched a program to boost the semiconductor industry. The last two years have also seen large investment in new production plants as some producers are seeking to diversify their production footprint in the region. The governmental programs support both establishment of production and development. One of the main priorities is to enhance the semiconductor production process. International cooperation is here called for, especially seeking unique technology in semiconductor manufacturing, equipment and semiconductor-related products.

How

As new semiconductor production plants are being planned and in construction there is a need for advanced solutions. There is also opportunities to engage in collaboration and R&D activities.
