Development of the 300 km2 Northern Metropolis
What
- With an area of 300 square kilometers, the Northern Metropolis (visioned to be international I&T hub) will cover from the west to the east of the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Boundary Control Points Economic Belt, as well as the deeper hinterlands.
- Given full development of the entire Northern Metropolis, a total of 905,000 to 926,000 residential units will be available to accommodate a population of about 2.5 million; provide 650,000 jobs including 150,000 I&T positions.
- Population intake for the first batches of private and public housing units is expected to start in 2023 and 2026 respectively
How
- In 2022-2023 budget, the Government has proposed to set aside HKD100 billion from the cumulative return of the Future Fund to set up a dedicated fund to expedite the implementation of infrastructure works relating to land, housing and transportation within the Northern Metropolis
- Many development projects and transport infrastructure of the Northern Metropolis are still under the planning study stage, will be largely completed by 2024, to be followed by detailed design stage for engineering works
- Private developers will invest significant amounts of money in the project
