India-Sweden Green Transition Partnership
WHAT
India is third largest emitter of Greenhouse Gases globally, wherein the country’s annual CO2 emissions has almost tripled in last 20 years.
Government of India has announced its ambitious commitment to net-zero emissions by 2070:
50 percent of the country’s installed capacity through renewables, and a 45 percent reduction in carbon intensity by 2030.
Indian Government has pledged to sectoral green transition strategies for energy, transport, agriculture, water, and urban development. Stringent regulations and policies to reduce carbon footprint are being introduced globally - Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and locally - Mission on Enhanced Energy Efficiency and Perform Achieve and Trade (PAT) scheme.
India’s manufacturing industries are a key contributor to its CO2 emissions, with the iron and steel, cement, and chemicals and fertilizers sectors having the highest emission footprint.
Indian companies operating in the hard-to-abate sectors have committed to reduce their carbon footprint and become carbon neutral by 2050, before the national target.
To remain competitive, the Indian Industry is gradually looking for collaborations with foreign players to shift towards development of fossil free solutions and technologies e.g., green hydrogen and CCUs, resource optimization, energy efficient solutions, etc.
