Electrify the Pilbara mining sites
What
At the beginning of 2024, BHP has put out a significant request for proposal (RFP) in aid of its decarbonisation efforts at iron ore mining sites in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. According to a report from the Australian Financial Review, the RFP encompasses renewables and energy storage solutions, with the company having previously stated that – in order to reach its 2030 emissions reduction goals – it needs more than 200 MW of wind capacity, a similar amount of solar, as well as 150 MW of battery storage to support its existing Yarmina gas plant.
How
The RFP forms a part of BHP’s larger efforts to reduce operational greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1 and Scope 2) by at least 30% from 2020 levels by 2030, with a longer term goal of net zero by 2050.
