226 billion SEK aviation infrastructure transformation plan in Thailand

WHAT
  • The Airports of Thailand (AOT) has announced a significant investment plan to enhance and expand airport infrastructure nationwide, with the goal of strengthening Thailand's status as a regional aviation hub.
  • This investment plan, estimated at around 226 billion SEK, will take place over the next 5-10 years and will involve building new airports, expanding current facilities, and upgrading essential infrastructure.

HOW
  • Suvarnabhumi Airport Expansion: AOT intends to build a new South Terminal costing 39 billion SEK. This terminal will surpass the current Main Terminal in size and is projected to boost passenger capacity by 70 million annually. The project also involves constructing a fourth runway and is expected to be completed by 2031.
  • Don Mueang Airport Expansion: A 12 billion SEK investment will increase capacity from 30 million to 40 million passengers per year. The project includes a new 166,000 SQM international terminal and upgrades to existing facilities.
  • U-Tapao Airport and Eastern Aviation City: This extensive 103 billion SEK project aims to turn U-Tapao into a significant aviation hub. In addition to revamped airport terminals, the project also includes a free trade zone for commodities, a flight training center, and an aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul center. The development of the airport will be divided into six phases. Construction is scheduled to start in mid-2025, with the first phase set to handle 12 million passengers by 2028. The final phase will support up to 60 million people.
  • Regional Airport Development: Plans involve expanding Phuket and Chiang Mai airports and building two new airports: Andaman Airport (Phuket Airport No. 2) and Lanna Airport (Chiang Mai Airport No. 2).
  • New Airport Construction: AOT plans to construct six new regional airports to enhance connectivity throughout the country.
